Mount David Thompson

The proposal, by Andy Korsos, to rename Mount David and the related geographical features of David Creek and David Lake to Mount David Thompson, David Thompson Creek and David Thompson Lake was successful. Official word came down in September of 2006 and the change is expected to be seen in upcoming documents related to the those features.

Korsos submitted his proposal to Parks Canada, The Geographic Names Board of Canada and the Government of Alberta, requesting formal clarification of the geographic name, stating: "Although Mr. Wheeler, of the Inter-Provincial Boundary Survey, made an admirable attempt to recognize David Thompson's accomplishments, specifically in the traversing of Howse Pass in 1807, the use of a first name is not a strong enough link from the geographical feature to the historical figure. The utilization of a surname, especially combined with a first name, invokes the curiosity of the human condition to look beyond the name of the feature and promote a rediscovery of its historical significance."
