The Oregon boundary dispute, or the Oregon question, arose as a result of competing British and American claims to the
Pacific Northwest of North America in the first half of the 19th century. Prior to the Treaty of 1846, the territory was primarily explored and mapped by North
West Company Surveyor David Thompson between the years 1807 and 1812. After his retirement from the fur trade, David Thompson went on to work for the International
Boundary Commission as Canada's Survey representative.
During his time on the commission and after his retirement from the same, Thompson spoke passionately of the Oregon Territory remaining in British hands and suggested a
number of alternative boundary solutions, one of which was the Columbia River itself acting as a boundary between Canada and the United States. During this period Thompson
would provide the British Foreign Office with a series of maps of the territory. This map is comprised of eight mapsheets and covers a land area between 45° to 53° latitude
and 110° to 126° longitude.
